I've started to understand how the old masters cast their Hexes! It's a bit complicated, but I'm sure I can figure it out. Let's see...

Chimera Spawn EggThe Chimera

An Error of Nature

When two unlike animals are joined by Cupid's Charm, nature may answer with a mistake that should have been impossible. The Chimera carries both bloodlines, but belongs to neither.

It is a carnivore, aggressive by instinct, and adults hunt livestock and may even stalk people.

Chimera

Chimera

Its body remembers every animal in its ancestry. A carcass may yield leather, feathers, bone meal, or wool alongside meat.

Spotlight inventory slot Raw Chimera Meat

Raw chimera meat is dreadful: stringy, nauseating, and revolting to taste. Even another Chimera refuses it; the beast breeds only when offered ordinary raw animal meat.

Spotlight inventory slot Cooked Chimera Meat

Fire makes the impossible flesh nourishing and awakens a random magical trace. Most are blessings; the only harmful answers left are Slowness and Weakness.

Too Much Feeling

I fed the vile stuff to an Amethyst Heart out of spite, expecting refusal. The Heart took it in place of the dust it had been about to shape.

Every mote of affection a birth had given me went into that one cut of flesh, and then the Heart spat it back at me, glittering. It had not made me a dust. It had made me something worse.

Spotlight inventory slot

Leave raw chimera meat in an Amethyst Heart where the dust would sit. Each whole dust the Heart gathers is spent soaking one cut, which it then spits out.

Eaten as it is, it fills like roast fowl and then punishes: the body reads it as an overdose of raw feeling. You will reel, you will glow with somebody else's love, and your gut will refuse to hold it.

Directing the Surge

The fault was never the flesh. The fault was that I ate it undiluted.

Feeling this raw wants a shape, and a pot gives it one. What I stirred in beside the meat decided which way the surge would run: towards the quiet of a grazing beast, or towards the hunger of a thing that eats the dead.

Wheat, a carrot, an oxeye daisy and any seed, boiled with the meat.

The surge settles into a grazing nature. Grass, wheat, seed and raw root become food, every vegetable feeds you further, and hunger creeps at half its usual pace. No beast will flee you now, not even one you struck.

The Price of Peace

Your arms lose a third of their force and your pick bites a fifth slower. Nothing but green things will go down at all.

And the herd will not merely tolerate you: it will count you as its own. Eat beside a grown cow, ewe or sow and then feed her, and she will come to you with intent. Whatever follows, you will not enjoy it, and you will be in no state to cast until the shame has passed.

Rotten flesh, a spider's eye and a bone, boiled with the meat.

The surge turns outward and downward. The restless dead, the crawlers and the things that burst leave you alone — unless you strike first, and that one remembers. Endermen answer to elsewhere.

The Ghoul's Bargain

Raw meat and carrion fill you like steak, a spider's eye is honest food, a bone can be gnawed with patience. Poison, rot and dizziness cannot touch you, the dark opens up a little, and both arms and stride grow surer.

But healing burns and harming soothes, hunger drains thrice as fast even at rest, and no cooked thing, no bread, no vegetable will pass your lips. Villagers flee, and golems see a monster.

One Nature at a Time

A body holds only one of these. Eat the other stew and the first lets go at once.

A draught of milk ends either, as it ends everything else. The bowl always comes back.

I devote this section to the magical and mysterious items I might encounter in my studies.

Soulbound RingSoulbound Vows

On Making a Vow

A Soulbound Ring begins as a quiet personal token. Soulbind writes one player's soul into a dropped ring and gives it a colour of its own.

A person may have only one living vow. Binding another ring while already married gives it that same vow and its shared living gradient; it cannot become a second marriage.

Offer two soul-bound rings here. When both owners stand close, the altar joins them and returns the rings.

Only an owner may place or take a ring.

Spotlight inventory slot Soulbound Ring

A bound ring shows its owner's name in bright colour. Once joined, both rings share a gradient made from their two souls.

Caster's Glamour changes only its appearance. Only the owner may place their ring in an altar slot.

Spotlight inventory slot Vow Altar

Use the altar to open its rite. Place the two bound, unwed rings in its two slots. The rings are also visible on the altar itself. When both owners remain within four blocks for five seconds, the spiral ends in a burst and the joined rings return to their owners.

Unmaking a Vow

A vow can be ended without destroying either soul. Place your own married ring in either altar slot, leave the other slot empty, then choose End This Vow. It removes the union for both people, including an offline spouse; their ring becomes soul-bound again when they next return.

While both owners keep a matching ring, their hearts cannot be directed to anyone except each other, their pets and ordinary admirers will not turn on the other spouse, they share ambit in the same world, and ten percent of one spouse's incoming damage passes to the other.

Putting a ring away suspends these benefits; it never creates a second marriage.

Amethyst HeartKeepsakes

Things That Remember

A little affection does not have to vanish when the spell ends. Given crystal, colour, and a place to rest, it lingers as a small kindness in the world.

These keepsakes are not merely ornaments: every one remembers some part of a tender moment.

Place the Heart on a sturdy floor, wall, or ceiling. When animals breed within twelve blocks, one nearby Heart gathers 1/7–1/2 of an amethyst dust; extra Hearts never multiply a birth.

Open it to store whole dust and watch the phial fill towards the next. At 64 dust plus a full phial, new love-media is lost and four coloured streams warn the parents.

Heart of the WorldHeart of the World

A World That Answers

The Heart of the World is not one block but a place prepared for the world itself. When its flowers, pillars, and four Candles of Infatuation agree, the central stone wakes in rose-violet light.

Build the shown seven-by-seven court. The Heart rests on a solid five-by-five amethyst dais; every outer pillar needs its own base.

Completing the Court

Place an amethyst flower at every cardinal mark. Together they must include a Rose, Dandelion, and Tulip; the fourth may repeat.

Each corner pillar may be two to four amethyst blocks tall and must end in an upright Candle of Infatuation. The whole court may be rotated.

The World's Memory

Place your own soul-bound ring in the right slot and choose Attune. Four streams enter the rising ring. Press the same button again to sever the link; its streams then flow back toward the candles. Stored affection remains dormant in the ring and returns when it is attuned again.

This bond belongs to the world. It is not a marriage and never replaces one.

Gathering Affection

Carry the linked ring to gather fractional affection from hostile kills, feeding and breeding adult animals, taming companions, and villager trades. It stores up to sixty-four.

Feeding young animals does not count.

World's Embrace

Only the ring's first attunement grants World's Embrace for one Minecraft day: a little speed and luck, and greater damage only against hostile creatures. Severing and reconnecting never grants that first blessing again. Every Crystallized Affection embodied later adds five minutes.

An active spouse receives half the blessing and contributes half charge to the linked ring.

Spotlight inventory slot

Put ordinary amethyst shards in the left slot. Embody consumes one whole charge and one shard for each crystal. Hold use to break a crystal open.

Its answer may be quiet, practical, ancient, or legendary. Forgotten echoes draw only one or two useful finds from old treasure chests.

Patterns and actions that perform a magical effect on the world.

PoppyHexamancy

On Hexamancy

Hexamancy reads what a creature wants, not merely what its body can move.

These patterns let me read a heart, quicken it, guard it, call it, or close it.

Every one of these needs its target inside my ambit. Nothing here reaches further than I can.

These are the only patterns in this book the world will not undo for me. A charm outlives the casting, and only one of these takes one back.

Matchmaker Purification (entity → bool)

Your browser does not support visualizing patterns. Pattern code: wedadeq

Takes the creature to be examined. Returns true if it would breed right now, false otherwise.

Asks whether a creature is ready to mate right now.

It answers yes only for a grown animal that breeds from food, is off its cooldown, and is not heartbroken. Nothing in the world is touched, which is why it costs a rounding error.

Weaver's Purification (entity → list)

Your browser does not support visualizing patterns. Pattern code: dqdqdqdqdqd

Takes the creature whose threads I want. Returns a list of everyone tied to it, empty if there is nobody.

Returns everyone tied to a creature by a thread of fate.

What it has tamed, whom it has charmed, whom it married. Only creatures loaded in this same world can be listed - a thread I cannot reach is a thread I cannot see. A broken heart holds no threads at all.

Heart's Purification (entity → number)

Your browser does not support visualizing patterns. Pattern code: dqdqdqdqdqdeeddwdd

Takes the creature whose lovers I seek. Returns their combined usable health as a number.

Measures the usable strength of every creature that loves the named one.

A present lover contributes its current health. A heart sleeping in another world contributes the last strength the rite remembers; unpaid Tithe damage is already reserved and is not counted. The number is health points, not heart icons: a full vanilla player has twenty.

Animal Passion (entity →)

Your browser does not support visualizing patterns. Pattern code: wedadew

Takes the animal to hurry along. Returns nothing: the result is in the animal, not on the stack.

Hurries a willing animal along towards its next litter.

A tired parent forgets its cooldown; a willing one starts looking for a partner. Calves are refused outright: this is not a spell for children. The price never changes, so it tells me nothing about the beast.

Pheromone Mist (vector, number, number →)

Your browser does not support visualizing patterns. Pattern code: qqqqqwedadew

Takes a vector, a positive radius, and a positive duration in seconds. Returns nothing.

Unfurls a pale pink perfume at the named point.

Hostile creatures in its radius become neutral if no love, jealousy, or heartbreak already holds their hearts. They give off faint pink-white motes until the duration ends — or until someone hurts them, when the calm breaks at once. Players only feel a brief blush at the edge of their sight; a thinking mind cannot be made harmless this way.

Phantom Ideal (vector, number →)

Your browser does not support visualizing patterns. Pattern code: wedadewqeeqq

Takes a vector and a positive duration in seconds. Returns nothing.

Makes a transparent rose image of the caster at the named point. Three tendrils draw it into being, and it faces its maker without moving.

For its whole duration, every unbound creature within twelve paces forgets every other target and walks towards the image. It is no body to strike: it is a beautiful lie for gathering attention away from the living.

Blinding Jealousy (entity, entity, number →)

Your browser does not support visualizing patterns. Pattern code: qaeeqad

Takes the one to be made jealous, then the one it will guard, then how long to stay that way, in seconds. Returns nothing.

Sets one creature to guard another, and to resent everyone else.

The jealous creature follows the one it guards and charges at anything that comes within six paces of them - but never at the object of its own love. A creature with no way to fight is given one for as long as it lasts.

A broken heart cannot be made jealous, though it can still be guarded.

Siren's Song (entity, entity, number →)

Your browser does not support visualizing patterns. Pattern code: eeqqee

Takes the creature to be lured, then the one calling it, then how long the song lasts, in seconds. Returns nothing.

Draws a creature towards whoever called it.

It walks towards the caller and nothing else about it changes. A player caught by the song is drawn along too, and cannot look away from the voice.

Heartbreak (entity, number →)

Your browser does not support visualizing patterns. Pattern code: deedadewd

Takes the heart to be closed, then how long it stays closed, in seconds. Returns nothing.

Ends every feeling a creature carries, and lets nothing new take root.

Love and jealousy end at once, wheat stops working, and for a while the heart feels nothing of its own. It can still be adored, and still be guarded - grief only closes the door outward.

The only way out of a charm, my own included. It smokes while it lasts.

Soulbind (entity, entity →)

Your browser does not support visualizing patterns. Pattern code: wedadqdadewdw

Takes a player and a dropped Soulbound Ring. Returns nothing.

Writes a player's name into an unbound ring, waking only its few coloured facets. The ring must be dropped: a promise cannot be made to something still hidden in a hand.

Two such rings are offered at a Vow Altar. When both owners remain beside it, the altar writes each other into the rings. While both rings are carried, neither spouse's heart may be directed to another.

Breath Exchange (entity, entity →)

Your browser does not support visualizing patterns. Pattern code: wedadewwqee

Takes two married players. Returns nothing.

Lets two vowed souls trade one breath.

Every active status effect changes owners: strength, poison, fire resistance and every other condition. Their hunger changes hands too, including the hidden fullness and exhaustion beneath the drumsticks.

Both spouses must carry their own matching Soulbound Ring. A spouse may cast it across worlds, but no stranger may reach through their vow.

Heart's Reflection (→ entity | null)

Your browser does not support visualizing patterns. Pattern code: adewdwe

Takes nothing. Adds the active, online spouse as an entity, or Null when there is none.

Returns the other half of a living vow without disturbing the rest of the stack.

It returns Null if the rings are inactive or the partner is away. The returned soul can be used by Breath Exchange even from another world; shared ambit itself remains limited to one world.

The spells catalogued here are purported to be of legendary difficulty and power. They seem to have been recorded only sparsely (for good reason, the texts claim). It's probably just the ramblings of extinct traditionalists, though -- a pattern's a pattern.

What could possibly go wrong?

Red DyeCupid's Charm

Cupid's Charm (entity, entity, number → number)

Your browser does not support visualizing patterns. Pattern code: aewdadwewwdwdww

Takes the one who will love, then the one to be loved, then a strength of feeling. Returns the love's duration in seconds; -1 means forever.

The strength is not a duration. It is how much feeling I pour in, and what comes of it depends on how stubborn the other heart is.

A charmed creature keeps to the one it loves the way a tamed wolf keeps to its master: it follows, it fights whoever they fight or whoever strikes them, and if the chase carries it more than twenty paces from them it drops the quarrel and comes back.

Strength of Feeling

A heart resists a little under a quarter-point for every point of life; matching feeling holds it forever.

Thus two and a half binds a cow or sheep forever, and five a zombie, creeper, or skeleton. Less still works, but fades. Players resist a fixed amount and never yield forever.

Creatures with two hundred life or more refuse the spell. Below that, strength above five can reach tougher hearts.

Up to five, feeling is cheap - a flat price and a point. Past five the surcharge multiplies with every further point, so reaching further is arithmetically possible and practically a creative-mode stunt. There is no wall in front of the great monsters, only a bill; and in front of a boss, no amount of either.

What Comes Of It

Two animals of the same species are betrothed instead of charmed: they walk to each other, stand together a while, and then there are many children. Two of different species make one child of blended blood. Two zombies, one zombie. Everything else simply falls in love and follows.

A courtship needs two whole hearts, so a grieving animal cannot be betrothed - but anything can be *loved*, grief and all. Pointing the spell at one creature twice is not a charm at all: no heart can be handed to itself.

Like every Great Spell, its shape differs in every world, and is found written on an Ancient Scroll.

Ghast TearSuccubus' Tithe

Succubus' Tithe (entity, list, number →)

Your browser does not support visualizing patterns. Pattern code: weweewewwweeweweeeqqqqqdqqwqeqqqd

Takes the living creature to heal, a list of sources, and a positive amount of health. Returns nothing.

Draws health from creatures already bound by love to the named recipient. Name sources directly to choose them; every named creature must still love that recipient. An empty list means every active heart in that creature's harem, even in a distant or sleeping world.

Requested health is shared evenly. Weak hearts pay what they can; the remainder is divided again. The rite still draws the full request when the recipient is nearly full; excess healing burns away. A sleeping source keeps its share as a debt and pays it on next load, even if the recipient is gone.

If the chosen hearts cannot pay in full, the rite fails and draws nothing.
